Project Hamburg
Hamburg's historic label "The Gateway to the World" may be a bold claim, but Germany's second-largest city and largest port has never been shy.
With approximately 1.8 million inhabitants, Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany, after Berlin, and the largest city in the European Union that is not a capital city.
Hamburg, which played a leading role in the Hanseatic League in the Middle Ages, became a center of international trade, a legacy that continues to this day: it remains one of the richest cities in Germany, and Hamburg's maritime spirit continues to permeate the entire city.
It is the kind of city where the port and the city's history are omnipresent, from the incessant cry of seagulls over the neighborhoods to multicultural restaurants, architecture overlooking the sea.
Between 2008 and 2018, the number of overnight stays increased by 88%. In 2018, 7.2 million guests spent 14.5 million nights in Hamburg's 397 commercial accommodation establishments. The average length of stay was two nights.
